Easy, Fast and Simple Back-up Fable Fox fablefox@fablefox.com | http://www.fablefox.com

When my PC got stolen, I lost a lot of work, including but not limited to book chapters, movie script and song lyrics.

It was, in part, my fault. I usually back-up to my thumb drive, and I sent my thumb drive for repair when I got hit. I guess when it rains, it pours.

So I bought another thumb drive for a safe keeping. After all, I only burn completed projects and downloaded items.

There are a few plusses backing up to a thumb drive:

  1. Cheap, you can write an unlimited number of times to the thumb drive.
  2. Fast.
  3. Files are uncompressed. You can bring it with you and edit it on any PC or laptop with a USB connection. Having on the USB portable application such has Portable Open Office or any word editor make the job easier. I usually use .txt for lyric files and most PCs have a text editor.

All that I use is a free and simple application called SynchronX.

But first, fail to plan - plan to fail.

Because of SynchronX's limitation, it's best to put all your project folder into one large project folder. Such as this:

All project directories (book, scripts, lyrics) inside one main project directories.

Then you run SX.

Note that C:\project\ is on the hard disk while E:\project\ is on the thumb drive. Click Start to back-up.

I'm sure it's easy for you too access your project files. You can either create a link to that file from the desktop, or from the recent list on the program File menu. Did you know you can create a link to a directory from the desktop? Anyway, easy back up. Bye :-)
